Trendspotting #1

Welcome to my new blog series where I chat through trends, whether they’re right for your body shape and how to style them.

There’ll always be a love hate relationship with me and trends.

I’m all about the classics and a capsule wardrobe and am hesitant to jump on a trend but some trends are worth it and others end up sticking around longer than expected.

To start, here are 4 trends that are everywhere.

Long tops over wide leg jeans

So we know the wide leg isn’t going anywhere.

Typically you balance out a wide leg pant or jean with a more fitted top but that seems to have gone out the window (not saying you can’t still do this and I still do) but we’re also in this no tuck era and long tops have made their way into stores.

I’m talking tops that go over jeans and finish sometimes past the hips. While it’s a cool vibe it’s not for everyone.

Think about how fitted you want the top to be because ideally it just flows down rather than hug which means you’ll see the lines of your jeans around the waist and the button. The next thing is to consider whether you lose some shape with a top falling over the waist.

I think if it has some detail like an angled bottom or a cut out at the top it can balance out the proportions. Have a play and see what you like.

Polka dots

This is something I’ve watched creep into stores and online for a weeks now and, while florals are always a Spring mainstay, it’s nice to see a different pattern. The polka dots are not just the teeny tiny ones, but bigger and more spaced out across tops and dresses so it’s not too busy. That’s perfect if you’re not too keen onpatterns but want to give something new a try.

I’ve seen black and white and also brown and cream but I expect some more colour to come through as the weather warms up.

The waist scarf

This is not my vibe but this trend went down countless fashion week runways and the celebs are jumping on this.

It can add a bit of colour or a pop of pattern to your look but it can also add bulk so if you’re conscious of your mid section or don’t want to draw attention to your hips or stomach, then I would avoid this. Opt for the thin belt trend instead for a sleaker look.

Halter necks

This is one of my favourite styles. So feminine and so flattering on so many body types. I absolutely love the silhouette.

Back to body types, if you have a larger bust, go for a halter top that has an adjustable strap so you can tighten to make it feel more secure.

This style makes me really wish I’d held onto some of my clothes from years ago. I’m very happy to see this style back.

A reminder about trends though - don’t splash out because in a season, it might end up collecting dust in your wardrobe. And if you don’t love it, don’t wear it for the sake of it.

These are just 3 trends I’ve wanted to chat through but if you have any questions or want me to dig into something else, let me know. You can get in touch here

And as always, if I can help revitalise your wardrobe with some classic pieces or throw a few cool trends in the mix, book in a personal shopping session with me. There’s more info about it here
